Waipiata residents have received $7500 to purchase a new angel for their war memorial.

The damaged stone angel atop the township's monument needs replacing, and at the Waipiata Community Development Committee's annual general meeting it decided to allocate $2000 for the job.

A further $5500 has now been pledged by the Waipiata Ute Muster Committee ($2000), Maniototo Community Board ($2500), and the Maniototo Community Trust Fund ($1000).

Over the years, the angel had a section of its right arm broken off, plus it had several chips and holes.

Repair was not considered an appropriate option, and the development committee approached five organisations to help fund a white marble replacement.

It is hoped the new angel will be in place for next year's Anzac Day services.

The original angel will be displayed in a cabinet at the Waipiata hall.
