Wild weather brought snow to the Lindis Pass and surface flooding to parts of the Upper Clutha and North Otago yesterday, with more wet and cold weather expected for the South Island later in the week.

Heavy snow closed the Lindis Pass to towing vehicles for most of Monday and motorists were required to use chains to travel on the road.

The New Zealand Transport Agency also issued area warnings for State Highway 8 between Omarama and Tarras and Fairlie and Twizel due to snow and ice.

Heavy rain caused surface flooding in and around Wanaka with the Queenstown Lakes District Council closing McKay Rd near Hawea Flat.

Both Treble Cone skifield and Cardrona Alpine Resort received a fresh dumping of snow, leaving skiers and snowboarders happy with the cover.

Both skifields received about 10cm of fresh snow by mid-morning.

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines said another bout of severe weather was likely at the end of the week.

Snow was forecast for some inland areas and while it was not expected to be as low or as extensive as last week, it could still significantly impact on transport around the South Island, she said.

There was uncertainty around the exact timing and intensity of the approaching weather so the MetService encouraged people to keep an eye on the forecast, severe weather warnings, watches, and road snow warnings, especially if they planned to be outdoors or on road trips.
