PGG Wrightson Alexandra branch manager Don Sparks said the pub had been sold in the past couple of weeks and the buyers had asked for details to remain confidential.
"It could be a few months before we see any activity but I'm sure they'll have some plans for it. At this stage, it is not known whether they intend to run it as a pub and hotel or not," Mr Sparks said.
The pub's doors were locked in November last year after a lease expired, and it was put in the hands of mortgagee company Credit Union North.
In May, it was listed on the market for $250,000 after failing to sell through a tendering process.
Mr Sparks would not say how much the couple paid for the pub through the mortgagee sale.
The Poolburn Hotel had previously sold in 2006 for $380,000 to Aucklander Chris Forrest.
Mr Forrest, who could not be contacted by the Otago Daily Times, leased the pub to Poolburn couple Larry and Carman Connell for two years after failing to sell it.
Last year, Mr Connell told the ODT he and his wife had wanted to keep the pub open for the community, which is why they took on its lease despite their both having full-time jobs.
After two years of working around the clock, Mr and Mrs Connell decided they could not renew their lease, and closed the pub's doors.
Poolburn's pub had served the community as well as visitors for more than 100 years. Business had been increasing in recent years because of the Otago Central Rail Trail.
The next closest pubs are situated 10 minutes' drive away, over Blacks Hill at Ophir and Omakau. There is also a watering hole about 30 minutes up the Ida Valley at Oturehua.
