An emergency callout to what appeared to be a body hanging from the Clyde bridge was a "disappointing" waste of time and resources, Alexandra police said yesterday.
Police and ambulance services were called to the bridge across the Clutha River at 12.30pm yesterday, after several reports of a body dangling underneath the structure.
Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said a blow-up doll had been hung from the bridge, causing distressed Clyde residents to call police.
• Two 24-year-old Dunedin men have been arrested and charged with obtaining credit by deception after they allegedly bought about $5000 worth of merchandise from Alexandra stores using a stolen credit card.
The men were apprehended by police while driving on State Highway 8 back to Dunedin from Alexandra on Monday night.
Police found computer games, alcohol, and several expensive cellphones in the vehicle, and a 37-inch LCD television, branded clothing, and an iPod during a related search of an Alexandra property.
The men are due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.
• A 24-year-old Dunedin man has been charged with criminal damage in relation to racist tagging of property in Alexandra on March 24 and 25. Police said the man was apprehended on Monday night and would appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.
• One of the highest breath-alcohol levels in Central Otago in years was recorded by police in Alexandra on Friday night.
Senior Constable Mike Colligan said a local man, about 60, was caught driving in the town with a breath-alcohol level of 1236mcg. He is due to appear in the Alexandra District Court on June 4.
