It will be the Maniototo's turn to celebrate the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup success on Thursday, when the community welcomes back hometown hero Andrew Hore.

The All Black hooker and Patearoa farmer will be welcomed home at a function at the Maniototo Rugby Club rooms in Ranfurly, with an invitation open to the whole community.

Hore grew up in the Maniototo, attending the local primary school and John McGlashan College in Dunedin, and regularly returns to play for the local rugby club.

Next year, he will play for the Highlanders, having played for the Hurricanes for the past 10 seasons.

Maniototo Rugby Club president Paul Dougherty said the community had been right behind Hore during the tournament, as well as during the rest of his career.

When asked how different the celebration would feel for Hore from the victory parades last week, Mr Dougherty said "I think he will feel more comfortable down here."

Celebrations begin at 4.30pm on Thursday, with speeches and questions from local pupils starting at 5pm.

Maniototo Area School principal David Hunter said it was great for the pupils to see someone from the area achieving at the highest level.

"It shows them, with talent and hard work, you can reach the top of the mountain no matter where you are from."

Mr Hunter said the school sent a letter of good luck to Hore before the start of the tournament.

Not only was he looked up to as an All Black, he was seen as role model by the pupils, by coming back to play for the Maniototo club and talking to them in the club rooms afterwards, Mr Hunter said.

"I don't think many All Blacks are like that."
