A hands-on programme developed by a passionate science communicator is coming to Alexandra and Ranfurly in December.

Called Silver Science, it is specifically for the older demographic.

It was developed by Tūhura Otago Museum senior engagement co-ordinator Jessa Barder, who believed this age group was "overlooked" for opportunities to make science fun.

"When people think hands-on science, they think it’s for kids ... but it’s OK to have fun when you’re 65 or 85."

Workshops will also be free to attend to make it accessible, with the Central Otago workshops specifically focused on ancient to modern modes of data and privacy.

Ms Barder said they had already delivered successful programmes in Glenorchy, Oamaru and Owaka.

The programme has been able to go ahead due to funding from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, and it is an attempt to get science into communities that are not traditionally engaged.

Central Otago REAP’s Emma McLean anticipated an "awesome" workshop, and encouraged people to support it.

"If we can get the numbers they are looking to bring more opportunities to the region," she said.

The Alexandra event will be held at St Enoch’s Church Lounge beside Alexandra Community House on Monday, December 2 at 11am, with another session at 2pm.

Māniatoto will get the same show on Tuesday, December 3 in the Ranfurly Bowling Club at 11am and 2pm.

The workshop can be registered online on the Central Otago REAP website; numbers are at a minimum of 5 and capped at 35.
