The Vincent Community Board (VCB) approved a grant of more than $19,000 for renovations to the Earnscleugh Hall during a meeting at the Clyde Museum last week.

Last December, the Earnscleugh Community Society requested $18,216.31 for repairs to the 98-year-old hall’s supper room ceiling, as well as repairs to the guttering and wiring.

The VCB meeting agenda said funds would be drawn from the Earnscleugh Amenity Trust Fund, which was set up to help fund maintenance of recreation facilities in the area, such as the Earnscleugh Hall.

The trust is managed by the Central Otago District Council.

Normally grants are considered before work is undertaken, but the VCB was told by Earnscleugh Community Society member Angela McNaughton during the public forum, that finding a tradesperson to do a small job like at the hall was difficult.

Since the tradesperson who had done the previous work on the kitchen was due to move to Dunedin, the work was done before funding was granted, she said.

The society also asked for an additional $1294.38 which would bring the total requested and approved by the board to $19,510.69 to replace two interior doors, which would be installed by a retired joiner at no cost.

As well as Earnscleugh Amenity Trust Fund, the Earnscleugh Community Society used fundraisers and hall hire fees to manage and maintain the hall.

VCB chairman Jayden Cromb thanked the society for the work they did.

"It’s a very strong example of what a community group can do," he said.
