A food truck set up to give Cromwell College students hospitality experience will open to the public on Monday.

Cromwell College pathways manager Jenna Faulkner said the food cart was set up with the help of the Withiel Fund to encourage students who had an interest in hospitality and wanted to run their own small business.

Working on the food cart would provide students with valuable experience in customer service, finance and barista skills, she said.

Even the year 12 and 13 design students were able to contribute their skills by designing the logos.

The students would be running the cart, supervised by Otago Polytechnic barista and hospitality course leader Trist Wilson.

The cart would sell Sanga’s pies, Cake Lab cookies and L'affare coffee.

Profits from the food cart would go back to the school for future projects and to help school fundraisers, she said.

The cart will be set up in Barry Ave, near the tennis courts, from 10am until 2pm each Monday during the school term.

"We’d just love the community to ... support the initiative."
