Some of the soon-to-be tenants of the new Alexandra Community House were given a sneak peek of their new offices yesterday when they were shown around the building site.

With maps in hand, they walked around the 65 rooms to visualise where they could be working next year.

The $2.6 million, 1054sq m building, in the grounds of St Enoch's church in Centennial Ave, will provide a facility for social service agencies and education, arts and craft groups.

House trust chairwoman Bernie Lepper said it was "very exciting" to be able to see where everything would fit once the building was finished.

She said everything was on track for the building to be finished by the end of December and it was hoped the groups could move in over the summer holiday period before an official opening in the middle of January.

Four buildings on the site were removed or demolished to make way for the complex, the building contractors salvaging as much material as possible to recycle.

The money for the project was raised through grants from the likes of the Central Lakes Trust, the Otago Community Trust, the Lotteries Communities Fund, the Alexander McMillan Trust, Transpower, the Vincent Community Board and Pub Charities.

Mrs Lepper said the house trust was planning an open day fundraiser on June 9.

For a gold-coin donation, members of the public would be able to tour the site.
