Sunny weather drew crowds to Lawrence during the weekend to celebrate the township's annual arts festival.

Lawrence Summer Arts Festival committee member Ingrid Keating said the weekend went well, with good numbers of people attending from throughout New Zealand.

Dunedin artist Jenny Longstaff won top honours in the art competition, with her acrylic and pencil entry The Past and Present. Marlborough woman Catherine Lawes' A Blast from the Past applique painting-drawing came second.

On Saturday, festival-goers made the most of the sunny day, enjoying berries and ice-cream, lending their hands to learning a new craft or art technique, or browsing the many stalls and exhibits around the town.

The festival is held each year in Lawrence.
