Funding struggle for radio station

Ranfurly's independently-owned volunteer radio station is struggling with operation expenses as advertising becomes harder to secure.

Burn 729am board member and former station manager Amie Pont said the economic climate meant advertising was increasingly difficult to come by and volunteers were having to initiate new fundraising methods.

Cheese rolls and a sausage sizzle helped to net the radio $1000 over Easter at its biannual Maniototo Market Day held at the Ranfurly railway station.

Mrs Pont said Otago Volts cricketer Warren McSkimming also gave the station a shirt signed by the team, as well as a bat, which were auctioned on the day for a combined $400.

Stall fees from 26 stallholders completed the radio's takings on the day, she said.
