Fire ban might end

The fire ban which has been in place throughout Central Otago since the end of November might be lifted next week.

Central Otago principal rural fire officer Owen Burgess said while the rain earlier this week was widespread across the district, some areas, such as Alexandra and Cromwell, received only 12mm to 14mm.

Other parts of the district received 25mm to 30mm.

"The ban won't be lifted before the weekend but we'll look at lifting it, possibly next week, depending on what the weather does in the meantime," he said.

Strong wind was predicted for the area, which might dry it out.

The prohibited fire season took effect from midnight on November 28 last year.

A prohibited fire season meant any fires in the open air were banned and any permits for fires were also suspended.

Gas barbecues could still be used.
