They have clearly stumbled on a winning formula though, as their results at the national Golden Fleece awards in Ranfurly yesterday showed.
Not only did they win the champion fine wool fleece for the second year in a row, with 99 out of a possible 100 points, they scored an additional 12 placings throughout the competition's 40 categories. Of those, seven were first-place prizes.
This year, they missed out entering on the champion strong wool fleece class, won by Ian Smith of Ranfurly.
Their strong wool had already been sold.
Maniototo wool, in general, was well represented at the competition and was a frequent winner throughout the categories. The Patersons put that down to the good season and because the Maniototo had traditionally been a strong wool-growing area.
Organising committee chairwoman Margot Hall said 43 growers from around the country entered 150 fleeces and all set the bar high. This was the fourth year the Maniototo has hosted the event and more entrants are attracted each year.
