Sections of Central Otago's Maniototo community will benefit directly from Meridian Energy's proposed $2 billion Project Hayes wind farm, the hearing was told yesterday.

Meridian called Lammermoor Station owner and farmer John Elliot, of Paerau Valley, to give evidence in the hearing, on how the project would impact on his land and the surrounding Maniototo areas.

Mr Elliot's sheep and beef station comprises about 5200ha of the proposed 92sq km wind farm site on the Lammermoor Range.

He said property rental from Meridian would allow his organic farm to be developed for the future, which would have spin-off benefits for the local agricultural industry.

"It would have a huge impact on our property, we will be able to develop it more extensively and look after it better. There will be no detrimental effect whatsoever . . . we will also get better roading and access," Mr Elliot said.

Meridian's 176-turbine development would also generate jobs in the Maniototo area, in turn attracting families, boosting community numbers and school rolls, he said.

Mr Elliot said the 68 turbines proposed to be placed across about 75% of his property would have no adverse effects on his farming practices.

He would be happy for any areas of his property to be protected if deemed necessary through consent conditions, and was in support of Meridian's plan to revegetate land with native tussock and some exotic grasses.
