Designer's merino dress right on at WoolOn

A creamy white backless dress made from merino wool won the $3000 Otago Daily Times Supreme Award at the WoolOn Creative Fashion Event at Alexandra on Saturday night.

Cromwell designer Danielle Dunn's wedding-dress-inspired creation "Merino Matrimony" had earlier won the Special Occasion category.

About 500 people attended the sold-out show held in the Blossom Festival Grand Marquee in Pioneer Park.

This year's event eclipsed all others in size, with a record number of entries and the largest audience by far.

A total of 62 garments were entered, in seven categories, with the winner of each category receiving $500.

A "fire poi" show started the evening, accompanied by live music and drumming, and throughout the evening there were retail fashion parades showing off the latest fashions available.

Primary school children from Alexandra modelled their own wearable rubbish creations during one runway section.

The models and choreography were organised by Ican Models and Talent, which made the most of models from Alexandra.

Emily Campbell, who along with fellow Alexandra designer Chloe Hishon won the Young Designer category, modelled her own garment on the catwalk.

Other winning garments were made by designers from throughout New Zealand, including Napier, Te Anau, Queenstown, and Christchurch.

More than half the audience enjoyed the show from hosted tables, which offered Central Otago wine and catered food platters.

General admission seats were also scattered around the marquee, situated at Pioneer Park.

The WoolOn awards evening officially brought the 2008 Alexandra Blossom Festival to a close.
