Delta jobs go

Dunedin City Council subsidiary Delta Utility Services has confirmed it will lay off up to eight Alexandra-based workers, several weeks after six Christchurch-based workers were also made redundant.

Delta Utility Services chief executive John Walsh, of Dunedin, said the jobs would be gone before Christmas and "with more developers going to the wall, we expect more".

"This is just one of those cycles we are in."

The job losses came from the civil construction area of the company, and was the result of fewer subdivisions being built by developers, he said.

"The subdivision market has just dried up."

With civil construction employing almost half of the company's 550 employees, more job losses in the sector was a possibility.

To alleviate the situation more government funding in the sector was needed, he said.
