The Central Otago District Council is on the hunt for roving bike lovers.

The council has made the call as part of its Community of Bike Ambassadors (COBA) programme, a community-based project designed to increase safety and enhance the user experience around roads and the cycle trails.

The bike ambassadors will also support cyclists in towns and urban areas where cycle transport connections are being developed.

Council road safety adviser Chris Foggin said the programme had proven its worth, with people in a pickle already being helped by several ambassadors.

People of any age were encouraged to get involved with the volunteer programme, to help others enjoy cycling in the region, he said

"Why become a bike ambassador? Not only will you doing what you love, you'll be able to tap into gaining more skills in this free bike ambassador programme while also increasing your knowledge of the trail network and the infrastructure that goes with it," he said.

Bike ambassadors are an informal way to engage with other cyclists and to assist others where appropriate.

Typical activities include encouraging and role modelling safe cycling and expected riding etiquette, offering first aid or trail-side bike repairs, reporting trail issues, and helping support people develop their skills and confidence.

The latest cohort will be the third class of bike ambassadors ,with the first two courses being held last year.

The next course is due to be held on the weekend of February 22.
