A by-election will be held to replace Roxburgh Community Board member Tom Stevenson, who died this week.
Mr Stevenson (60) died at Dunstan Hospital in Clyde on Monday of cancer.
He had been a member of the Roxburgh board since October 2003, and would be greatly missed, Central Otago Mayor Malcolm Macpherson said.
"He had a rural farming background and a broad range of experiences which were useful to the board. It's a shame we've lost him so young," Dr Macpherson said.
A funeral service for Mr Stevenson was held at his home yesterday.
Dr Macpherson said a by-election would take place. However, its date had not been confirmed.
"It's still early days. We will work on that when the time's right," Dr Macpherson said.
An obituary for Mr Stevenson will follow.
