Costly damage to roads

Repairs to Central Otago roads damaged by a flood in May cost more than $40,000.

On May 17, heavy rain caused the Manuherikia River to burst its banks, washing out roads and bridges.

Land on either side of the river was also flooded, including parts of Galloway and Alexandra.

Immediate repairs to St Bathans Loop Rd at the Dunstan Creek and Manuherikia bridges cost $42,000.

The Central Otago District Council covered 49% of the cost, and the rest was paid by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

CODC roading manager Julie Muir said most of the repair work was complete, although parts of St Bathans Loop Rd would be resealed in coming months, and the council would assess flood damage to a bridge on Hawkdun Runs Rd.
