After the last of 36 steel beams were put in place across the Clutha River early last month, further preparatory work has allowed concreting of the bridge to begin.
HEB Construction senior on-site project manager Simon Potts said three parts of the bridge build were now under way — the deck, approaches and its links to State Highway 8.
"Currently, the concrete pours on the bridge decks have started. The west and east bridge approaches with bulk fill are progressing well, as are the western and eastern tie-ins/sealed connection to the highway."
The $25 million project is set to finish at the end of the year.
The new two-lane structure over the river replaces the current single-lane bridge, which was built in 1887 and is one of a handful of remaining wrought iron bridges left on the state highway network.
