The Central Otago District Council is looking at possible changes to its waste recovery and processing systems, as the cost of sending waste to a landfill increases.
At a meeting of the council's infrastructure sub-committee in Cromwell yesterday, members discussed ways in which waste could be minimised.
CODC waste minimisation officer Sophie Mander said in a report the current model of sending waste to landfill was set to double in cost over the next decade.
The council also faced a requirement of the New Zealand Waste Strategy for all unlined landfills to be closed by December next year.
Options discussed at the meeting included fortnightly wheelie bin collections to replace weekly collections, which would halve the council's collection costs and encourage residents to produce less waste.
CODC assets and contracts manager Murray Washington said that would financially be the "most prudent" option.
