Technical's hot streak of form continued as it notched a ninth successive win in all competitions.
Both teams displayed an attacking mindset from the kick-off in search of the crucial first goal which so often leads to a win in games between evenly-matched teams.
Technical player-coach Aaron Burgess was pleased with the performance and result.
''Throughout the match, we knew we were playing well, and would eventually score,'' Burgess said.
''Now it's fingers crossed for a home draw in the next round of the cup.''
An entertaining first half had spectators applauding quality technical play from both sides.
New University recruit Ewan Bakker showed signs of excellent technique throughout the match, but a player-of-the-day award would have been given to team-mate Jef Potrich, whose second-half goalkeeping exploits were of the standard of a professional, and kept the students in the match until the final whistle.
After an even first hour, Technical's pressure finally paid dividends in the 77th minute when defender David Hayman won possession 30m out and attacked the penalty area.
Hayman launched a powerful shot with pinpoint accuracy from just outside the box to finally break the deadlock as the ball sneaked pass the despairing dive of Potrich.
In the other southern Chatham Cup game, former Caversham defender Tom Schwarz scored the only goal for Cashmere Technical in its 1-0 win over Coastal Spirit.
In a FootballSouth Premier League match on Saturday, leader Caversham had a 3-1 win over Mosgiel at Memorial Park.
An early strike by Seamus Ryder gave Caversham the lead, but this advantage was cancelled out six minutes later when Regan Coldicott scored for Mosgiel.
Charles Owen scored just before the halftime break to give Caversham the lead, while Mosgiel rued an own goal just after the interval that gave Caversham a cushion and earned the team points.
Green Island left it late in a basement battle with visiting Queenstown Rovers at Sunnyvale.
The host side had Sean McIntee to thank for scoring the only goal of the game when he followed up with confidence after the Rovers keeper could only make a partial save from a strong shot on target.
At Ellis Park, Northern deserved credit for holding out a fast-finishing Roslyn-Wakari in a 0-0 stalemate between two sides weakened by players on university holidays.
