Police are warning motorists to be more vigilant following two serious crashes on State Highway 1, north of Dunedin, over the past week.

One person died after a single-vehicle crash near Waitati on Saturday, when the car they were in went down a bank.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the scene about 3.30am.

"The sole occupant of the vehicle was sadly located deceased."

The accident came eight days after four people were injured in a crash on the same stretch of road.

On April 4, a vehicle driven by a 55-year-old woman, with an 8-year-old boy in the passenger seat, was heading north on the highway when a cattle beast walked into their path.

They had no time to stop, hit the cattle beast and crashed into a ditch on the side of the road.

The dead animal was pushed into the southbound lane and into the path of another vehicle, which flipped it on to its roof and then into a third car.

The police spokeswoman urged motorists to remain vigilant, especially heading into the colder months.

"It is vitally important that drivers take notice of, and drive to, the weather conditions."

She said rain, snow and ice made it harder to stop and react quickly.

"Allow some extra time when driving from point A to point B, and increase following distances.

"As it starts to get colder, black ice also becomes a real risk for drivers."

She reminded people using roads in the South that if a patch of road looked wet or damp, they should assume it was black ice.

"Let your car slow down on its own, and brake gently before you get to a curve."
