Dunedin business sources have speculated up to 300 mainly non-sworn police staff, undertaking mainly administration-type duties, could be headed to the city.
Among 1800 new police announced earlier this week, Police Minister Stuart Nash said a further 485 positions would be "back office support".
Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said in April a major employer was considering coming to Dunedin, but continues to decline to identify the organisation.
When contacted yesterday he said he was "unaware" of any police interest, and declined again to disclose the potential employer.
"Hell no. It’d probably kill it," Mr Cull said.
A police spokesman confirmed police were considering options for file management centres, including both devolved and centralised models and "various locations" for a larger hub, if centralisation was chosen.
"However, final decisions on the preferred structure are yet to be made, and it is premature to speculate about any further detail at this stage."
