A plan to brighten up Alexandra streets at night has become cheaper, but details need to be settled before it can get community board support.
Jamies Jewellers co-owner Clyde Vellacott is working with the Alexandra, Clyde and Districts Business Group on a plan to decorate parts of the town with LED lights.
He wants to hang different kinds of lights on lampposts, around trees and over the streets around Centennial Ave, Pioneer Park, Glad McArthur Gardens and Tarbert St.
The plan is to have Alexandra businesses contribute money to the project based on their size.
Mr Vellacott said this week he was finalising how much each one was willing to give.
Last week, he presented the idea at a Vincent Community Board meeting in Alexandra.
He said he wanted the board to contribute money to the project and also to take responsibility for maintaining the lights once they had been installed.
The cost of the hardware had dropped to $60,000 from $71,000 after parts of the proposal were put on hold, such as putting lights in Limerick St, he said.
Board member Barrie Wills said it was a "great idea".
Board member James Armstrong said he was "concerned about the cost to ratepayers".
Mr Vellacott said he would go back to the board once business contributions were finalised and installation and maintenance costs had been established.
He would also ask the supplier how frosts affected the lights.
