A woman died and two people were injured in a two-car crash on State Highway 8, near Lawrence, about 7pm yesterday.
Weather conditions appeared to be a contributing factor, Clutha area police said in a statement.
It was raining at the time and it appeared a vehicle travelling towards Milton slid in the wet conditions as it rounded a corner and collided with a vehicle travelling towards Lawrence.
The woman, the sole occupant of one of the vehicles, died at the scene.
Two people travelling in the other vehicle were taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital for assessment, a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said.
One had moderate injuries and the other minor injuries, but the spokeswoman last night did not know their gender or whether they had been admitted.
No further details were available last night.
