A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed twice during a domestic violence incident in Coromandel yesterday.
Emergency services were called a house about 9.45pm to find a man and a woman in the kitchen, with the man bleeding from the chest.
"It appears the couple have become involved in a physical altercation during a domestic dispute in which it is alleged the woman has stabbed her partner. Both are believed to have been drinking alcohol in the build up to what happened,'' said Detective Glenn Ewing of Waihi CIB.
The 31-year-old man was airlifted to Auckland hospital and the woman, 36, was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon.
Further charges were likely, Mr Ewing said.
A guard was placed at the property overnight to allow a scene examination to be conducted today.
"Last night's incident highlights the risks associated with the consumption of alcohol in tense domestic situations,'' said Mr Ewing.
