The ''Dunedin spirit'' was evident at yesterday's Stadium to Surf fun run and walk, Sport Otago event manager Michael Smith said, citing an increase in numbers despite the rain.
About 1600 people took part in either the 10km, 5km or 3km events.
About 70% of the participants opted for the 10km event, which started at Forsyth Barr Stadium. Entries were up by about 500 on last year, and although organisers had hoped for more participants, it was still considered a good result.
This year more stalls and activities had been organised in a bid to increase entries, but most people were keen to head home soon after they finished.
Despite the rain, most participants were cheerful at the finish line in Hancock Park.
''The Dunedin spirit came through in so many hardy people that got through the race extremely well.
"We didn't have a huge walk-up crowd because of the weather.
''Hopefully next year we have some better weather,'' Mr Smith said.
Anthea Doherty (62), of Mosgiel, Judy Reid (66), of Outram, and Pam Deans (59), of Waihola, said they took part as both a catch-up and to get fit for an upcoming tramp of Abel Tasman National Park.
The happy trio said the rain kept them cool during their ''walk and talk''.
