Those wanting to brush up on what all this East of Eden fuss is about may be out of luck.
Demand for the popular 1952 novel by John Steinbeck is on the rise in Dunedin in the wake of filming across the region for its Netflix adaptation.
English actress Florence Pugh was spotted in period costume in Princes and lower Stuart Sts on Sunday after cast and crew departed from Oamaru earlier this month.
Set mainly in the Salinas Valley, California, the novel follows the Trasks and the Hamiltons — intertwined families destined to re-enact the fateful biblical story of Cain and Abel.
Hard To Find Books Dunedin manager Blaze Forbes said they had observed a "noticeable" spike in demand for East of Eden.
A lot of people had been asking for Steinbeck books in recent months, specifically for East of Eden, but he had not initially made the connection to filming.
"Steinbeck is one of those authors that you would think a second-hand bookshop, you'd just be able to walk into and grab whatever you need, being one of those classic benchmark American authors.
"His stuff is popular — Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath — oftentimes, when we get them, they're snapped up pretty quick as it is anyway.
"So, at the moment, with the extra interest and all the press about celebrities and things wandering around Oamaru, I think we're pretty much completely out of that title in particular."
Steinbeck had a lot of great books in his catalogue, and East of Eden was a good entry point, Mr Forbes said.
He was pleased more people were deciding to read the original source material for the series.
"It's one of those cool things that gets the book on to more people's radar, and so more power to it."
Meanwhile, the University Book Shop’s website lists two versions of East of Eden as on-order and expected in-store soon.
A Dunedin City Council spokesman said the Dunedin Public Libraries had one copy of East of Eden and they had recently seen "a small uptick" in interest in the book.
"It has been issued three times since October, but nine holds have been placed on it in the past 20 days.
"We will be adding four more copies of the book to our collection later this week to help satisfy demand, and we are also exploring eBook and eAudio options."
