This little piggy is not off to the market ... yet.

This little piggy is looking for a home.

Pumbaa, the boisterous 7-month-old Captain Cooker/kunekune-cross, is up for adoption at the Dunedin SPCA.

And while looking at his picture might go bacon your heart, SPCA animal attendant Paige Matthews said certain families would not be allowed to adopt him, even if they tried.

"He loves human interaction and has a playful nature, and he loves a good back and belly scratch when he’s not chewing on your shoe laces," she said.

"But he can give a surprisingly forceful head-butt when he gets excited, so he wouldn’t be the best fit for households with young children."

She said a member of the public brought Pumbaa in to the SPCA after he followed them home one day.

"He came from out of nowhere. He just followed a woman up her driveway and she didn’t know what else to do with him.

"It’s quite rare for us to put pigs up for adoption."

Miss Matthews said Pumbaa was a friendly pig with a big personality, and given his sociable nature, he would thrive in an environment with other animal companions to keep him company.

"He loves to do his own landscaping. He’s made his own mud bath here.

"So an outdoor space where he can dig, root around, and engage in all the activities pigs love, would be his ideal home."

She said she and other staff at the SPCA would be sad to see him go because they had all become very fond of him and his malodorous muddy enclosure, but it was time for him to go live with his "forever" family.

Hopefully, this little piggy will be able to go wee, wee, wee, all the way home.
