A large mural by Dunedin street artist Koryu Aoshima, above the beloved George Street Cats, nears completion beneath the Pine Hill Rd (SH1) overpass.

Last year, Keep Dunedin Beautiful planned to paint a new mural over the cats, but the initiative was met by a petition signed by more than 1500 people opposing the replacement of the cats, which was designed by Cornelia Fechner in 1989 and painted by Otago Girls’ High School pupils.

The cats from the earlier design have been incorporated into the new Ōtepoti mural, which was designed by seven surrounding schools.

The mural will be officially unveiled next Sunday, from 11am-noon.
