Police are investigating a suspicious fire in Mosgiel.
A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters from Mosgiel Station were called to reports of a blaze at Memorial Park in Gordon Rd just before midnight on Wednesday.
On arrival, the crews found burnt building paper in the park.
The fire was out when they arrived, he said A police spokeswoman said police were called to the park just after midnight yesterday.
The investigation was ongoing, she said.The Dunedin City Council was paying South Dunedin business Impact Roofing & Plumbing $100,000 to replace the leaky Mosgiel Memorial Gym roof. Impact co-owner Blair Melrose said scaffolding had been put up outside the gym building about a week ago and 25 rolls of building paper were put on the roof on Thursday.
"[They] have got up on the roof and thrown five rolls off and grabbed some screws and started rolling it out and set it on fire."
About $600 worth of building paper and 1000 screws had been stolen.
The building material was put on the roof so builders could begin the roof replacement work on Monday.
The gym building had no damage from the burglary or fire, he said.
Security camera footage recorded in the area is to be reviewed.
