Mystery over cause of burst pipes

Dunedin City Council staff are wondering whether there has been land movement in the Waikouaiti area, after two water pipes burst about the same time yesterday.

The problem meant about 100 Waikouaiti homes were without water from 5.30am until 9.30am, and with lower water pressure for a while after that time.

Network manager Rezaul Haque said yesterday a 200mm pipe in Ramrock Rd, and a 150mm pipe on State Highway 1, just south of the Waikouaiti bridge, burst at the same time.

There appeared to be no connection between the two that would have caused that to happen, and water pressure was not high.

"It may be land movement," Mr Haque said.
