A horse is backlit by the auroral display from Otago Peninsula about 2.20am on Friday.

Photographer Maija Jespersen said the night started out cloudy, but cleared after midnight.

"It was a lovely calm night. It was magical being out there."

She said it took about two hours in the chilly conditions, wearing a coat, two hats, two pairs of pants, and a headlamp, waiting for the horse to stand still in a good position, before she captured this image.
