Dunedin is fast becoming the ''onesie'' capital of New Zealand.
Bed Bath and Beyond buying manager Carla Frische, of Auckland, said its Dunedin store sold the most ''onesie'' jumpsuits per capita out of any of its stores nationwide.
''As fast as they come in, is as fast as they go out.''
A onesie had a zip in the front and a rear ''flap'' so that the garment required minimal removal, Ms Frische said.
Although she bought the garments, she would discourage anyone to wear one in public.
'' Personally, I think they are hideous but everyone else thinks they're great.''
She had expected the comfortable clothing to be a ''fad'' but strong sales continued.
Ms Salisbury, Bed Bath and Beyond Dunedin manager, said she had sold several hundred onesies to a range of Dunedin residents from teenagers to senior citizens and ''even big grown men''.
A onesie was designed as loungewear but had evolved to become street fashion and was often worn around Dunedin.
''I have seen people at the supermarket rocking out in a onesie. They have no fear,'' Ms Salisbury said.
