Primary-aged pupils in the Sacred Heart School walking bus had a "shocking" close call when a motorist drove through a pedestrian crossing they were using in North Road.
School community constable Eddie Smith was with the bus on Thursday morning and noted the registration number on the car.
He got in touch with the driver and issued her with a $150 fine for failing to give way.
Constable Smith said the pensioner driving "felt terrible" about her mistake.
He said although she was driving cautiously, she was too focused on what was happening on her side of the road and failed to see the pupils using the pedestrian crossing.
He recommended drivers be extra careful near schools around operating hours.
"Little people are a little harder to see," he said.
Sacred Heart acting principal Bronwyn Bradshaw said the walking bus was about a quarter of the way over the crossing when a woman drove through without stopping.
She described the incident as "shocking".
