A cat who became everyone’s friend in the west Harbour suburb of Ravensbourne has died.

The cat, believed to be a stray and dubbed "Track Cat," made her home on the cycle trail by the Ravensbourne Fire Station, and had attracted many a pat from passersby.

But on Thursday the Ravensbourne community found out she had been hit by a car, and died.

One local has taken it upon himself to make a plaque in her memory.

West Harbour Community Board member Jarrod Hodson said there was nothing better after a hard day at work to go to the cycleway and give Track Cat a pat.

"Probably twice a week at least I would normally see her, especially when I’ve got my youngest son with me. We would go for a walk down the cycleway and she would normally just be sitting there on the path. "

He would be making a plaque with a picture of Track Cat, as well as a bit on her story, to hang on a post by her makeshift home.

"She really loved the attention, you could tell she was healthy and enjoying being in her own environment," he said.

Track Cat was hit by a car on State Highway 88.

Mr Hodson said the person who hit her immediately got out and started to search for the owner, but could not find anyone.

"Her owner was the entire Ravensbourne community I guess."

Track Cat first made the cycleway her home in 2022. Efforts to find whether she had a family failed and she had made her home in a bush there ever since.

There had been an outpourings of grief from people on social media.

"She was definitely a bit of a Ravensbourne identity — she was our cat, our Track Cat.

"People are sad, people are shocked, and people were saying they’re going to miss Track Cat so much."

Mr Hodson was not sure where her remains were but hoped a local person had her with them.

"It’s very clear that the cat actually meant a lot to the community ... she was such a beautiful, healthy looking cat."
