Work continues on the construction of the new Dunedin Kmart store as an opening appears imminent.
Contractors are fitting out the interior of the building in Andersons Bay Rd.
The store is believed to be opening in two weeks time, but Kmart declined to confirm an official date when asked by the Otago Daily Times.
Demolition of the original site began in late 2022 and a 1000sqm extension brought the building’s total footprint, including its inwards goods area, to 5200sqm.
About a month ago, workers installed the red and blue Kmart sign to the front of the former Smiths City building.
In late April, Otago Land Group Ltd owner and director Martin Dippie estimated the building was about 85% completed.
There was still another couple of months of work remaining before it would be handed off to Kmart to stock shelves, he said.
Hiring for the store began in mid-March, and a Kmart spokeswoman previously said more than 100 people would be employed.
Online job listings for positions at the store previously indicated it would open in "approximately June".
