An incident on the city's harbour cycleway which left two people with moderate injuries serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and share the path, a cyclist says.
A Hato Hone St John spokesman said an ambulance responded to the incident in Portobello Rd at 12.30pm on Sunday.
Two people were transported to Dunedin Hospital in a moderate condition.
Regular cyclist Lorne Townend came across the crash while on an afternoon ride.
He said when he went past, he saw firefighters, an ambulance and what looked like three people involved.
"I think it’s quite dangerous sometimes ... [The cycleway] is a great thing to have for the city, but it is a bit precarious. I go on there quite a lot and quite often get the impression that it’s not that safe."
He said the lack of a barrier could be fatal if someone was to fall on to the rocks at low tide, citing the case of experienced cyclist Bill Allen, who died after falling on to rocks in October last year.
"The bike path is so busy now with all sorts of different users, dogs, prams, scooters and guys cycling like they’re racing.
"All it takes is glancing away for a second and suddenly you’re quite close to the edge."
The bike path could be a "bit too easy" of a ride and could lead many into making a small but potentially painful mistake.
"It’s a very fast path, and if you’ve got a tailwind or something behind you, you can fly along there and get to 30kmh really easily.
"Cyclists on road bikes should probably be sticking to the road. There just isn’t enough room along that section for that type of cycling ... For casual users, you’ve got to watch your speed, because you can really pick up some pace on there."
