Highlanders first five Cameron Millar is "progressing" from a nasty head knock but there will be no update on his immediate future until next week.

There was a collective gasp from Highlanders country when Millar suffered a sickening blow in the game against Moana Pasifika on the North Shore on Friday night.

The popular first five had just come off the bench to replace Taine Robinson when he was caught flush in the face by charging Moana midfielder Danny Toala in the 49th minute.

Millar went down and stayed down, referee Ben O’Keefe immediately blew time off, and the game was delayed for a decent spell while the player was monitored by medical staff then taken off on a cart.

Later that night, the Highlanders posted an update on social media that Millar was "up and about" and would be monitored.

They confirmed yesterday the Gore product had suffered a concussion and was progressing through HIA protocols.

An update on his availability would be issued next week.

Two other Highlanders backs with injury concerns will be out for two to three weeks.

Both halfback Folau Fakatava and fullback Finn Hurley were late scratchings from the Moana Pasifika game.

Fakatava, who desperately needs a run of sizzling form to get back into All Blacks contention, has a quadriceps strain, while rising star Hurley has a hamstring issue.

The Highlanders have reasonable cover at halfback — Nathan Hastie was excellent against Moana, and James Arscott is a steady hand — but with Hurley out and Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens (neck) still seven weeks away, they have fewer options at fullback.

Young midfielder Josh Whaanga (back) and experienced winger Jona Nareki (ankle) could be back on deck by the time the Highlanders, who have the bye this week, host the Hurricanes on March 14, but blindside flanker Oliver Haig (foot) is still at least six weeks away.
