Facial hair of all shapes and sizes was on display in Dunedin last night — all in the hirsute of greatness.

The inaugural Otago Beard and Moustache Competition was held at Re:Fuel. About 12 people entered in the competition’s five categories.

Organiser Adam Rowe said the event raised money for the Otago Mental Health Support Trust.

A total of $335 was raised.

The competitors were judged by national competition organiser Ygnacio Cervio, three-time winner Sam Wakelin and Dunedin musician Molly Devine.

The winners were offered entry into the  national competition in Auckland in October.

Mr Rowe said he hoped the event would be the first of many.

"I’m hoping to make this an annual event, so if it goes well and we get a good turnout it will hopefully happen every year," he said.

The winners were: Best beard, Jono Toms; best moustache, Peter Fleury; freestyle, Hamish Jackson; crowd favourite, Peter Fleury; whiskerina, Ash (surname not provided).
