Works by musical giants of the French "Belle Epoque" of the late 1800s will feature in chamber music recital "Springtime in Paris" this weekend.

The concert, to be held this Sunday, October 13, from 3pm at Bayfield High School auditorium, will feature veteran musicians Donald Cullington (piano) and Sydney Manowitz (violin), along with flautists Fiona Pickering and Philippa Fotheringham.

Pickering said the four musicians would perform works by French-born composers Debussy, Ravel and Faure, along with foreign-born composers who thrived in Paris, such as Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Martinu.

The performance will include solos, duos, trios, and quartets.

"The music covers a wide range of styles and techniques developed by these composers and features the flute, as the instrument held a prominent place in French musical life during this period," she said.

Pickering said Manowitz and her father Donald were good friends who had performed many times together over the years. Now that they were growing older, they enjoyed getting together to play.

Fotheringham and Pickering are both members of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra wind section.

"This will be a nice occasion for all of us to perform together.

"It’s lovely to be playing with my dad, who has often been my accompanist in the past ," she said.

The concert will be made even more special by the fact the "baby grand" piano the group will use on Sunday was donated to Bayfield High School by Donald and Stella Cullington.

Entry is by cash only at the door — adults $10, concession $5, children free. Canapes will be served at the interval.

Proceeds from Sunday’s concert will go to international medical charity Medecins sans Frontieres.
