No detours were available, he said.
"We will issue an update when we're in a position to do so."
Fulton Hogan said Hawksburn Rd had reopened, having temporarily closed the alternative back country route due to high volumes and multiple unsuitable vehicles attempting to make the journey.
It was letting traffic through one end at a time, beginning at the Cromwell end. However, it warned drivers who did not have a suitable vehicle to "not even attempt it".
Thompson Gorge Rd, another alternative track not suitable for general use, was also closed, Fulton Hogan said.
Vehicles not suitable for the road had also attempted this route and were ''causing issues''. Fulton Hogan said it had closed the road for safety.
