There were few surprises in the men's section of the Otago Tennis Open yesterday with all seedings going as expected.

However, on the women's side last year's women's champion, Emma Johns (Otago), had a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Canterbuy junior Beth Williamson.

Hector Garcia, a Mexican coach working in Timaru, won his first round without losing a game. The top seed then beat Stephen Hollands (Otago) 6-2, 6-2 in a more intense quarterfinal.

Second seed Vaughan Kingi (Canterbury) also won two easy straight-set matches.

Taranaki representative Jono Ussher was pushed hard at the quarterfinal stage by Julian Main (Canterbury) but held on when play was moved indoors for a 6-2, 7-6 win .

New Zealand junior representative Harry James (Queenstown) was too solid for Tim Breitbarth (Otago), winning 6-4, 6-0, and will meet Garcia in the semifinal today.

Williamson will meet No 1 seed Libby Scott (Otago) in today's final.

Scott earlier beat Brittany Wong (Otago), after Wong was too steady for third seed Jessie Watson (Otago), winning 6-2, 6-3.
