Vaughan Kingi (Canterbury) and Libby Scott (Otago) won the Otago Open titles for 2009 in Dunedin at the weekend.
Kingi added the open title to his Otago indoor title. He beat Mexican coach and top seed Hector Garcia 6-4, 6-1.
Garcia started strongly but Kingi worked his way into the match after many long rallies and Garcia began to make errors under pressure.
Kingi served well and began to win him more cheap points.
Scott (15) was too consistent for Beth Williamson (13), of Canterbury, winning 6-1, 6-1. Scott timed her winning shots effectively and was able to stay in a point when under pressure.
Earlier, Kingi took 3hr to subdue Jono Ussher (Taranaki) in a hard-hitting semifinal with many long points.
The score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Garcia gradually gained the ascendancy over Harry James (Queenstown) in a counter-punching duel, winning 7-5, 6-0 in the other semifinal.
Emma Johns, who had earlier suffered a surprise loss to Williamson, also went down to team-mate 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation event.
Watson, in turn, lost to junior Brittany Wong 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation final.
The men's doubles was won by Kingi and Julian Main (Canterbury), who beat Garcia and Steven Dries (Timaru) 6-1, 1-0 with Dries retiring injured. Earlier, Dries and Garcia had survived a match point to beat Stephen Hollands and Andrew Mitchell 2-6, 6-7, 11-9.
