Balmacewen men beat Mornington-Roslyn Raiders 4-2 to complete the pre-Christmas round of Dunedin club tennis unbeaten on Tuesday night.
Both teams were without their No 1 players but Balmacewen's depth showed through as it took both doubles in fading light to claim the margin and head into the final rounds with a commanding lead.
The two-person summer league now takes over until the main championship resumes in late February when the main body of students return.
John Alexander and Matt White battled to close wins over Scott Campbell and Nick Dalziel respectively, and when Stacy Hunt claimed a set in losing to Oliver Reid, Mornington-Roslyn was left needing both doubles to win the tie.
Eastern Harbour kept the pressure on with a 4-2 win over St Clair.
Again it was the doubles which were decisive, with Harbour taking both in tight two-set results.
Jeff Elliotte took player of the day honours with a keenly fought 7-5, 6-4 win against Phil Mirfin,a result which should see Elliotte in the frame for Otago selection again.
Mornington-Roslyn Privateers were untroubled beating Taieri 6-0.
St Clair women gained a 2-1 win over Eastern Harbour with the promising Sian English beating Olivia Bates 6-0, 6-0 and Georgia Hume beating Heike Cebulla-Elder 6-4, 6-1.
The doubles went to Amy Rapley and Marlies Marthen.
Rapley and Marthen were unavailable for the singles which cost Harbour a possible winning result.
Alice Bourne and Jessie Stevenson shrugged off the absence of Brittany Wong and led Balmacewen to a 3-0 win against Mornington-Roslyn.
