The New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday confirmed speculation about Nonu, announcing the 85-test All Black had signed a two-year deal with the Blues.
It is a big shift for the Auckland-based franchise after Nonu walked out at the end of a disappointing 2012 season. It had appeared then a return to Auckland was a long shot.
But Blues coach Sir John Kirwan has welcomed Nonu's return to the Auckland-based franchise.
''Ma'a has been in brilliant form for the All Blacks and we're thrilled to welcome him back to the Blues. He's one of the best midfielders in the world so to have someone with his abilities is a huge asset to the squad,'' Kirwan said.
Nonu (31) may have played well for the All Blacks in recent times but it has not been replicated at Super 15 level.
He was axed by the Hurricanes at the end of 2011 and had a disappointing year for the Highlanders last season, climaxing in being sent off for a tip tackle against the Crusaders in June.
Joining the Blues, Nonu is scheduled to play his first competitive match against the Highlanders.
The sides clash in the opening round of the competition at Forsyth Barr Stadium on February 22.
Also likely to be in the Blues side is former Kiwis captain Benji Marshall and former All Black Jerome Kaino.
With Nonu signing for the Blues, Blues midfield back Malakai Fekitoa is believed to have signed for the Highlanders. He will be joined in the Highlanders midfield by Winston Stanley.
Highlanders general manager Roger Clark was not willing to confirm those signings yesterday.
He said a 37-man squad would be named next week for the 2014 season.
The Highlanders are likely to make announcements in the next few days over on-field leadership for next season and also the make-up of its coaching team.
Brad Thorn appears to be the obvious candidate for captain while other possibilities are Ben Smith or Aaron Smith.
The coaching team may have a change of roles after Kees Meeuws resigned as scrum coach.
