Ben Miller did better than average in his first start of the season.

He bagged four tries, knocked up 50 points, and set a record for a school rugby team which has been around for more than 130 years.

Miller (17), a year 13 pupil at Otago Boys' High School, had his first starting game for the school first XV on Saturday and scored four tries and 15 conversions to amass 50 points in his side's massive 135-0 victory over James Hargest College, in Invercargill.

Otago Boys' High School first XV coach Ryan Martin said Ben had a fine game, and not all of his conversion attempts were from in front.

The side scored 21 tries in all and was up 80-0 at the break.

It was a record score for the school, a record winning margin and most points scored by an individual in a first XV match.

Miller, who has a scholarship with Australian Rules club Hawthorn, was usually an outside back reserve but he started at fullback on Saturday, as the school side rested some players.

Otago Boys' sits atop of the Highlanders First XV competition, and plays Dunstan High School in Alexandra next Saturday.
