Rugby: Highlander's return chance to impress

Kurt Baker will make his first start for the Highlanders in two seasons as the side takes on the Force in Dunedin tomorrow night.

Baker will start on the left wing for the Highlanders, replacing Malakai Fekitoa, who moves into centre while Winston Stanley drops out of the squad.

Baker played five games for the Highlanders in 2012 but was not selected for the side last year and opted to concentrate on sevens.

He came back into the Highlanders squad this year and with Patrick Osborne out injured with a high ankle sprain, and Buxton Popoali'i now retired, the options in the outside backs look thin.

Baker is an all-round footballer who has perhaps lacked a bit of confidence to perform at this level. A good game tomorrow night may make a big difference to his future.

In other changes to the side which lost narrowly to the Chiefs on March 1, flanker Shane Christie returns to the side and will start on the openside flank, John Hardie moves to the blindside flank and Gareth Evans drops out of the squad.

Maximum pace is needed to cover the smooth surface at the covered stadium, so two tearaways have been picked, but it is tough on Evans, who played well in the opening games.

Brad Thorn is still getting over a rib injury and was not considered for selection.

Joe Wheeler and Jarrad Hoeata will lock the scrum, with Josh Bekhuis coming off the bench.

The Highlanders' front row remains the same for the third straight match, with young props Craig Millar and Matias Diaz looking to make an impact off the bench.

The Highlanders have recorded two wins over the Force. Since then, the sides have met five times with the Force winning the lot.

The Highlanders confirmed yesterday they disciplined a couple of players after an incident in a taxi last month.

Highlanders general manager Roger Clark said the matter was handled internally and players were disciplined. He declined to name the players.

- The Otago Daily Times understands first five-eighth Hayden Parker was one of the players and he was dropped from the squad to travel to Hamilton the following week.
