Rugby: Highlanders to get valuable game time in warm-up

Highlanders coach Glenn Moore said nothing should be read into the team he has named to take on the Chiefs at Carisbrook tomorrow.

The Highlanders would hit the paddock tomorrow in their first warm-up game for the Super 14, and Moore acknowledged, with the game being played in 20 minute quarters, there would be plenty of changes.

"There are just various combinations we want to look at and other parts of the game that we want to look at with certain players in their positions," he said.

Moore has named 12 players on the bench, including returning All Blacks Tom Donnelly and Ben Smith, though captain Jimmy Cowan and Adam Thomson have not yet resumed full training.

Southland youngster Robbie Robinson will get his first taste of Super 14 action, starting at fullback, while Michael Hobbs will wear the Highlanders jersey for the first time and will start at No 10.

With Jayden Hayward having a niggle with a rib injury, Jason Shoemark will move in one place from his usual centre berth.

Brett Mather will play centre while Ryan Shortland, who, along with Mather, is in the wider training squad, will be on one wing.

Fetu'u Vainikolo, who will want to start a fresh page in his career this year after a forgettable 2009, will play on the other wing.

Scott Cowan, also from the wider training group, gets a run at halfback while John Hardie is on one side of the scrum, with Tim Boys on the other.

Jamie Mackintosh will captain the side from loosehead prop, sharing front-row duties with Jason Macdonald and Bronson Murray.

Along with Hayward, others out of contention because of injury are lock Joe Tuinea, who cut his foot in the daily harbour dip earlier this week, outside back Kendrick Lynn and Clint Newland (calf).

Lynn, who has a groin injury, has the most serious injury and he looks a doubtful starter for the first competition game.

Though it may be late January it is only three weeks until the Highlanders have their first competition game and Moore conceded it is time for a game.

"You can train the house down for several months but there is nothing like getting out there and playing the game. We want to test out our game structures and get some continuity into our game.

"We do want to win. Getting a result we want is always good but there are many factors in the game we want to look at and work on. Now is a good time to work on those."

Robinson was seen as both a fullback and an inside back, while Hobbs would get also get time at second five-eighth, Moore said.

The Chiefs have rested all their All Blacks and Sione Lauaki will captain the side from No 8.

Much interest will focus on the return of Richard Kahui, who plays his first competitive game of rugby since last year's Super 14 final.

Counties-Manukau flier Tim Nanai-Williams starts at fullback, with Aled de Malmanche starting at hooker.

The Chiefs have named an 11-strong bench.
